NBE has officially notified changes to the NEXT exam pattern effective from the 2026 batch. The new pattern introduces competency-based assessment replacing the traditional MCQ format in Step 2.

FMGE / NEXT Eligibility Checklist

All of the following must be satisfied before you can appear for FMGE or NEXT:

Valid NEET qualifying score (NMC mandated from 2021)
NMC Eligibility Certificate for the country of study
MBBS degree from an NMC-approved university
Completed 54-week rotating internship at NMC-approved hospital
Valid passport and university completion certificate
No criminal record (police clearance from country of study)

NEXT vs FMGE — Key Differences

FMGE (Existing)

Single paper MCQ-based screening test. Passing threshold: 150/300 marks. Students who graduated before NEXT rollout may still appear for FMGE.


NEXT (New Framework)

Two-step competency-based exam. Step 1 (theory) and Step 2 (clinical). Applicable from 2026 batch onwards. Replaces FMGE progressively.
